The National Research Council of the Philippines co-organized the “Stakeholders’ Forum on the Protection of the Coastal Zones of the City of Tacloban and the Municipalities of Tanauan and Palo” last 16 March 2018 at the Ironwood Hotel in Tacloban City. The forum was spearheaded by the DOST- Leyte Provincial Office under the supervision of the DOST Region VIII, by its directors Engr. Glenn Ocaňa and Engr. Ed Esperancilla, respectively. Other major partners were the Wetlands International, the Netherlands Red Cross, and the Partners for Resilience (PfR) 2016-2020 Project.
Sneak Preview of the Day that was: DOST-NRCP’s Annual Scientific Conference and 85th General Membership Assembly
Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aguirre Aquino IV, the foremost ally the Department of Science and Technology being the Chair of the Senate S&T Committee, graced the annual NRCP event and reiterated his support to science and technology through his keynote speech entitled “R&D Legislative Directions for Countryside Development”. He emphasized the role of the science community in pushing for the country’s development.
DOST Secretary Fortunato T. Dela Peña, on the other hand, said that this year’s conference theme, "Policy Research for Legislation,” echoes the urgent call for action to all researchers, scientists and innovation experts to conduct research to influence policy or conduct researches that can be used to gain the support of the public and policy makers to bring about specific policies or policy change in the country through legislations. He also mentioned the latest initiative of Senator Bam Aquino on his recommendation for the institutionalization of the DOST Balik Scientist Program which he signed last March 6, 2018.

Nine Filipino researchers from various fields of basic, applied, and social sciences along with the academic discipline of humanities will receive Outstanding Achievement Awards from the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) of the Department of Science and Technology this March 14, 2018, during its 85th General Membership Assembly and Annual Scientific Conference at the Philippine International Convention Center.
